Toyhauler Magazine to host "Quartzite" on steriods
Bob Ashley RV Business Thursday, March 5, 2009
Toyhauler magazine has announced plans to sponsor a two-day RV show Nov. 27-28 – the Friday and Saturday following Thanksgiving – in the desert dunes area in Glamis, Calif., where an estimated 70,000 rigs will be assembled.
“Instead of getting the people to come to the show, we are going to take the show to the people,” said Patrick Brady, publisher of the bi-monthly magazine headquartered in Phoenix, Ariz. “We've gotten comments from a lot of manufacturers and vendors who are frustrated by the state of the current RV show circuit. Nothing new and fresh is happening, and they are looking for something different. This will be that. This will be Quartzsite on steroids.”
The Imperial Dunes, about 50 miles northwest of Yuma, Ariz., in extreme southeastern California, have some 100,000 acres of sand hills and are a popular spot for people to play in their four-wheelers and dune buggies.
“The kicker is that there will be 30,000 to 40,000 people camped within walking distance of the show and there will be 300,000 people in the dunes for the weekend,” Brady said. “Our strategy is to go to the heart of where people are on that particular weekend.”
Twelve to 15 dealers representing manufacturers of sport utility RVs are expected to participate.
Brady said that because the show will be dealer-based he doesn't expect that it will conflict with the 47th Annual National RV Trade Show Dec. 1-3 in Louisville, Ky.
